aperiodisk
An exhibition by Pauline Kraneis and Nikolas Theilgaard

Opening reception: Friday, January 17, 2025, 4-6 PM
The upcoming exhibition “aperiodic” at du.al features an installation by Pauline Kraneis and Nikolas Theilgaard, that examines the blurring of the boundaries between personal space, memory, and the real world. A dialogue unfolds between reality and projection, past and present, inside and outside, in two parallel exhibition windows that each open a distinct dimension of spatial perception.
The starting point for the presentation is a wall-sized photograph of an ornamental tiled floor from the Certosa di San Martino monastery in Naples. This classical periodic pattern, which carries the history and symbolism of religious space, is placed in dialogue with the external world—the industrial landscape of Frederiksø. The theme is further explored in the second display. Here, the structured geometry of the tiles invites play with scales and patterns. The space transforms from a solid form to a fluid dimension. According to architect Bruno Taut, the art of architecture is the attempt to translate spatial perception into new, non-repeating patterns. In technical terms, these patterns are referred to as “aperiodic.”
The fluid transition between inside and outside, between memories and new perceptions, reflects the idea of spatial expansion and model spaces as an artistic practice. On a subtle level, not only is the space transformed, but also the very thinking behind it—an exploration of the relationship between architecture, art, and memory. Walter Benjamin believed that there is no fixed boundary between what we perceive and what we imagine. In the installation, this fluid boundary comes to the surface.
